Who You Walk With Matters More Than You Think

Starting out is an exciting place to be.
There’s energy. Curiosity. Hope.
That feeling that anything could still happen.

But… there’s also uncertainty. And a LOT of it!

You’re stepping into a world where the rules aren’t written down for you, and the people around you start to matter in ways school never fully prepares you for.

One of the biggest lessons I continue to learn (often the hard way) is this:

Your growth will be shaped less by your talent, and more by who you keep close.

Not Everyone Is Meant to Come With You

Early in your career, it’s easy to assume everyone around you wants to see you do well. Most do. Some don’t. And some don’t even realize they’re holding you back.

Pay attention to how people make you feel after you leave them.

Do you feel encouraged, clearer, more focused?
Or drained, doubtful, smaller than you were before?

People who complain without action, mock ambition, or treat effort like a joke slowly pull you off course. Not loudly… quietly over time.

And here’s the important part… you don’t need to fight them!
You don’t need to explain yourself.
Distance is often the kindest move for everyone involved.

Look for Energy, Not Titles

The right people won’t always be the most impressive on paper. They won’t always be the loudest or the most confident. So here’s what you NEED to look out for:

Who takes responsibility (even when it isn’t convenient)?
Who are curious instead of bitter?
Who talks about building, not just criticizing?

These are the people who help you grow without even trying to. And these are the people you need in your life… especially at the very start!

And when you find them, listen more than you speak!
Show up prepared. Be grateful, but not dependent.

Success Early On Is About Direction

You don’t need to have everything figured out. No one does.
What matters most at the start is direction.

Are you moving toward learning, growth, and effort?
Or toward comfort, approval, and staying safe?

The people you choose will quietly answer that question for you.

One Last Thing

Be patient with yourself!
You’re allowed to learn. The least you can do is give yourself that grace.
You’re allowed to change your mind.
You’re allowed to outgrow people.

Starting out isn’t about becoming someone new overnight.
It’s about protecting your momentum while you figure things out.

Choose your circle carefully.
It will shape far more of your future than you realize.

I really hope this message helped all of you starting out (I read all your messages)!
And for those of you who’ve found your way through life, let this be a reminder that offering help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Have a great week everyone!
